Ed Slaughter Argues before California Court of Appeal
On March 6, 2012, Ed Slaughter argued before the California Court of Appeal, Second Appellate District, in Los Angeles, California. In January 2011, after a lengthy trial on the merits, a Los Angeles County jury returned a defense verdict for the firm's client, a national distributor of brake lining products. The trial court ultimately awarded nearly $60,000 in costs. Plaintiffs have not challenged the underlying defense verdict. On appeal, they have only challenged the trial court's award of costs under California Code of Civil Procedure section 998, arguing that, contrary to a recent decision rendered by the Second Appellate District, settlement offers to married plaintiffs must be made separately, not jointly.
